The act of rowing together in an imaginary boat, the premiere of the improvised play, is a strong metaphor for this healing experience. Here and Away is set in a village just outside Delhi, India. Here life seems to be lived as it has been for hundreds of years, yet is now on the brink of change, with a new cityscape now visible on the horizon.
Ravi, is about 10 years old, and, as he as he experiences the world go by, he contemplates the world he was born into, the wonder and mystery of nature, the confusion of changing times and people, and the possibilities of the future. He is left with unanswered questions, rather than any resolve.
The film is intentionally shot very simply and without a linear dramatic narrative. Rather, it evokes feelings of wonder and questioning, and captures passing moods and moments of becoming.
