Sybil, Bomb Shelters, Typos, and Bountiful Gift Giving

Remember "Sybil"? The book was published in 1973 and then made into a TV movie starring Sally Field and Joanne Woodward. It told the supposedly true story of a woman with 16 multiple personalities who had suffered horrific abuse by her mother. The story became a pop culture phenomenon and a revolutionary force in the psychiatric world. But was it really true? Author Debbie Nathan says it was largely a sham and one of the most damaging frauds in medicine. Using recently opened archives to piece together the truth about Sybil, she chronicles her findings in "Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case."

President Kennedy was facing off with the Soviets and in an October 1961 speech, recommended a fallout shelter for all Americans "as quickly as possible." Several bomb shelters were built for the President around Washington DC and along the east coast, and most were top-secret and did not officially exist. One of those, termed the "Detachment Hotel," is located off Palm Beach Florida, on a place called Peanut Island and is now open to the public. Anthony Miller is a member of the executive board of the Palm Beach Maritime Museum, a nonprofit which gives tours of the bunker and the former Coast Guard Station.

Typos on billboards, menus, bumper stickers, churches and parks only annoy us for the moment. But friends and fellow writers Jeff Deck and Benjamin Herson just couldn't get over it. Instead, they armed themselves with sharpies, chalk and the "elixir of correction" white-out, and set-out on a mission to eradicate the country of as many misspelled words and mislaid commas and apostrophes as they could. They chronicle their adventures in "The Great Typo Hunt: Two Friends Changing the World, One Correction at a Time."
