I’ve been a pilot for a major U.S. Carrier since 1989. Before that I flew A-10s for the Air Force. I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters in the UK, and then at McClellan AFB in California. I left the Air Force and then we won the cold war. I think it was just a coincidence

Early Days of Tourism
Glen Helen is a working cattle station and a tourist resort that caters to visitors that want to truly immerse themselves in the West Macs. The permanent water hole at Glen Helen Gorge is home to many species of animals, including water birds and fish. Glen Helen provides a perfect base from which to explore the West Macs region.
For the traditional owners of the land though this inviting swimming spot is off limits. They believe it is the home of an ancient and powerful Rainbow Serpent.
The landscape around Glen Helen is as spectacular as you will find anywhere in the West Macs, and includes views of the much-painted Mount Sonder, which is one of the highest points in Central Australia.

Serpentine Gorge is yet another stunning natural feature of the West Macs region. The area provides the opportunity for long or short walks through lovely river red gums and alongside idyllic semi-permanent water holes. There are lookouts and well marked trails offering some fantastic views of the types of landscape and geology that are so evocative of Central Australia.

The Owen Springs Reserve was formerly the Owen Springs cattle station - location of one of the first station homesteads built in Central Australia. The area protected within the Reserve is rich with Northern Territory history. Follow the main access track through the Reserve and you are in the footsteps of the first European explorers to penetrate this region and open it up for white settlement. Mounting an expedition in 1860, John Stuart and his companions William Kekwick and Benjamin Head were making their way northwards along the Hugh River when they discovered a large waterhole that Stuart named Owen Springs. Connecting a route via reliable water sources was vital to the ambition of establishing a north-south route and one of the immediate results of Stuart's explorations was construction of the Overland Telegraph Line. But even before this was completed, the cattlemen were moving in. When the first arrival, William Gilbert, founded the Owen Springs station he set in motion the settlement process.
