Common Sense, Paine's pro-independence monograph published anonymously on 10 January 1776, spread quickly among literate colonists. Within three months, 120,000 copies are alleged to have been distributed throughout the colonies, which themselves totaled only four million free inhabitants, making it the best-selling work in 18th-century America. Its total sales in both America and Europe reached 500,000 copies. It convinced many colonists, including George Washington and John Adams, to seek redress in political independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain, and argued strongly against any compromise short of independence. Highly controversial in 1787, the U.S. Constitution broke heavily with both British tradition and colonial radicalism to create what John Adams termed "A government of laws, and not men."

The London Sinfonietta is one of the world’s elite contemporary music ensembles with a reputation built on the virtuosity of its performances and ambitious programming. It is committed to placing new music at the heart of contemporary culture and pushing boundaries; the ensemble regularly undertakes projects with choreographers, video artists, film-makers and collaborations with electronica artists, jazz and folk musicians.
The creation of new music has been at the core of the London Sinfonietta’s work since its foundation in 1968. It has commissioned or premiered over 200 works, ranging from Luciano Berio, Harrison Birtwistle and Steve Reich to the emerging composers involved in its Blue Touch Paper project – including Tansy Davies, Larry Goves and Anna Meredith – an innovative initiative which gives the opportunity to take risks and develop ideas without the pressure of a public performance. The 2009-10 season will see the London Sinfonietta perform world premieres of new works by Harrison Birtwistle, Alexander Nowak, Claudia Molitor, Richard Barrett and Dai Fujikura, as well as UK premieres of pieces by John Adams, Paul Dresher, Wolfgang Rihm and Richard Ayres.
London Sinfonietta concert performances are increasingly being conceived as the centrepiece of a cluster of related projects and events. It was one of the first UK orchestras to explore the creative space where artistic and educational experiences meet and continues to break new ground in this field. The innovation and creativity experienced on the concert platform is reflected in the ensemble’s participation and interaction programme, which gives young artists - in sound design, animation and textiles, as well as music - the opportunity to work with the ensemble in a creative environment.

Talk About Talk is devoted to talking about talk--to discussing communication in all of its guises--from face-to-face, to electronic--verbal and nonverbal--interpersonal, public, private, persuasive, funny, sad, good, bad--satirical, imperial, lyrical, tyrannical, mystical, proverbial, ugly, plain, and beautiful--ironic, iconic, laconic--Platonic, Sophistic, Eristic--caustic, sweet, neat, and banal.
We talk about talk, and others’ talk about talk, from all time-periods and as many cultural perspectives as we are able to competently navigate.
On most programs we interview scholars in the field of rhetoric and communication and talk about their talk about talk--their published research. In addition to discussions with guest scholars, some programs consist of discussions of broad questions pertinent to the field(s) of rhetoric and communication. Additional programs may consist of discussions and debates focusing on controversial issues operative in current public discourses.
Talk About Talk is sponsored by the Colgate University Speaking Union/Student Lecture Forum and is broadcast live at 12:00-12:30 p.m. EST on Wednesdays on WRCU 90.1 FM.
