This documentary follows the the life of Aliaune Thiam, aka Akon. He grew up in Senegal before his family (including his father, jazz percussionist Mor Thiam) returned to the United States and settled in New Jersey when he was seven. There he discovered hip hop for the first time, as well as crime. He was eventually jailed, but he used the time to work on his musical ideas. Ignacio Carrillo (Marciano Martínez) is a vallenato singer from Majagual, Sucre, who decides, after his wife's sudden death, to stop playing and return his accordion, which is said to be cursed, to his master. He is joined by Fermín Morales (Yull Núñez), a teenage boy who admires Ignacio and wishes to become a juglar like him. Carrillo reluctantly accepts, given his loneliness. On Ash Wednesday 1968, Carrillo, Morales and their donkey start a journey throughout several towns in the Caribbean region in Northern Colombia, until Taroa (a small caserío in Uribia jurisdiction), in La Guajira desert, where Carrillo's maestro supposedly lives. Butterfly Crush is a modern love story set against the backdrop of the Sydney music industry, starring award winning Australian actor, Amelia Shankley. A female song and dance duo threaten to self-destruct on the brink of fame. The girls are up for the Australasian Song Awards, but their chance at success is jeopardised when one gets involved with a Kings Cross cult, the Dreamguides, who are into astrology and virtual dreaming. The other must then risk everything to save her. The film is shot with a podcast aesthetic and is set in iconic Sydney locations.
